The Palenque ruins are a Classic Maya city in the Chiapas rainforest, 150 kilometres from Villahermosa. Entry costs about 200 MXN across two fees, the Temple of the Inscriptions holds the tomb of Pakal, and only a tenth of the city has been cleared from the jungle.
Pakal, the Temple of the Inscriptions and the Tomb Below
K'inich Janaab' Pakal ruled Palenque for 68 years from 615 CE and built the city into the western power of the Maya world. Alberto Ruz Lhuillier lifted a floor slab in the Temple of the Inscriptions in 1952, followed a rubble-filled stairway down 25 metres and found Pakal's sarcophagus still sealed.

Getting There, Costs and Surviving the Humidity
Two tickets are collected: a national park fee on the access road and the INAH archaeological zone fee at the gate. The site opens at 08:00 and closes at 17:00, and the first two hours are cool enough to walk the full circuit without stopping.

Wear closed shoes for wet stone, carry repellent for the forest paths and expect howler monkeys before you see them. Palenque is not a day trip from the Riviera Maya under any itinerary, so plan at least one night in Palenque town.

Can you enter Pakal's tomb?

How do you get to Palenque?
Villahermosa airport is the closest at 150 kilometres, about two and a half hours by road. From Merida it is roughly 550 kilometres and eight hours by bus, so Palenque is an overnight trip, never a day trip from the Yucatan coast.
Is Palenque better than Chichen Itza?
They answer different questions. Chichen Itza has the monumental plaza, the astronomy and the easy access from the coast; Palenque has the art, the readable history and the rainforest setting. Palenque wins on atmosphere and loses badly on travel time.
When is the best time to visit Palenque?
Visit between December and April, in the drier months, and be at the 08:00 opening. Palenque sits in rainforest with humidity above 80 percent most of the year, and afternoon rain is common even outside the May to October wet season.
