Cenote Xcanché sits 1 km east of the Ek Balam parking lot, a 15-meter open cenote with turquoise water, hanging tree roots and a wooden staircase to a community-built swim platform. Life jackets included, biodegradable sunscreen only, operated by the local Maya cooperative. Perfect cool-off between the Acropolis climb and the drive to Chichen Itza.

Why Ek Balam Is the Only Major Yucatan Pyramid You Can Still Climb
Climbing the Ek Balam Acropolis is the single reason this combo tour exists as a category. INAH closed the main pyramid at Chichen Itza to climbers in 2006, and every other well-known Yucatan site (Uxmal, Cobá, the latter as of 2020) followed. The Acropolis is also home to El Trono, the 8th-century stucco jaguar-mouth doorway of king Ukit Kan Le't Tok', one of the best-preserved monumental Maya stucco facades anywhere in Mesoamerica. Buried and re-exposed in 1998, the original plaster still carries the fangs, eye sockets and curled upper lip of the monster-mouth frame. You pass it on the way up.
Ek Balam vs Chichen Itza on the Same Day, Scale, Crowds, Climbing

Cenote Xcanché, The Community-Run Swim Between the Two Sites
Cenote Xcanché is a 15-meter open cenote 1 km east of the Ek Balam archaeological zone, connected by a paved jungle path. Turquoise water, hanging tree roots from the surface, a wooden staircase down to a community-built swim platform. The cooperative that runs the cenote is made up of families from the neighboring Maya village of Hunukú, the same families who staff the Ek Balam ticket windows.
